WJ Hockey Blasts Past Padua 6-1

Walsh Jesuit defeated Padua Franciscan 6-1 at OBM Arena in Strongsville on Friday, Dec 22, giving the Warriors their forth straight Great Lakes Hockey League win.

Matt Morris provided the first WJ score by curling under the left dot and shooting short side, helped by Jonathan Gabriel. However the Bruins outchanced the Warriors 5-4 and the first period ended in a 1-1 tie

The Warriors took over in the 2nd period thanks to the third line setting the tone. Everyone working hard together, forwards Sasha Trudel, Matt Lasker, and Anthony Calleri hemmed in the Bruins for 30 seconds with repeated cycling. Charlie Huscroft came in from the point for a free puck in the right corner, “dipsy-doodling” across the bottom of the circle against the tired defense to score in traffic and there was no looking back.

Morris scored his second goal on the power play, a rebound off a Drew Rossiter blast from the middle point teed up by Steven LeVasseur. LeVasseur then forced a turnover along the center-ice boards, recovered the puck in the middle and split the defense for a breakaway goal on a backhand move.

Gabriel provided the back-breaker on the very next shift, another breakaway goal triggered by a sharp pass out of the zone from Connor Cook, initiated by goalie Jakari Desphy. Gabriel accelerated north-south past everyone and finished with a forehand move.

Walsh enjoyed a 20-2 scoring chance advantage over the final 2 periods, hitting the post 4 times. Max Miotke hit the post twice, but took on two defenders at the left outer hash to feed LeVasseur, scoring his second goal beneath the dot, using a screen set by Hunter Nalepka.
