Walsh Jesuit defeats Hoban in the Division I Sectional Title Game
Saturday, March 2, the Walsh Jesuit Men's basketball team beat Archbishop Hoban 57-52.
The Walsh Jesuit student section was electric especially in the second half when the Warriors went on a run. The chants of "M - V - P" for Tommy Cummings were appropriate as he took over down the stretch. "That's what captains do, they can overcome hostile environments and Tommy is a special player," said Walsh Jesuit Broadcasting Network host Jeff Lansky. Cummings posted a career high of 22 points.
Cummings also had six assists, three rebounds and two steals. Other key contributors came from Junior, Donovan Morris with 11 points while Sophomore Erik Stern added eight points, nine rebounds and four blocks for the Warriors. WJ also received 16 points from the combination of Juniors Charles Curenton and Maison Ross, and Seniors Colin Reardon, Spencer Williams, and Doug Venneri.
"The guys have stayed together and worked to get better every single day; to see that hard work rewarded with a huge, season defining, win over Hoban, one of the best teams in Northeast Ohio, is one of the great experiences a team can have. We really stress the process every day. Do the right things day in and day out, and the results will be there in the end. I think this game was a testament to the guys buying in to the process. They work hard in practice every day and that showed itself in the game, as all of that hard work manifested itself in a great team win" said head varsity coach and Walsh Jesuit Alumni Director, Kevin Byrne.
The Warriors advance to the district semifinal where they will meet Copley at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7 at Barberton.
