Walsh Jesuit High School is pleased to announce that Dave Mariola has accepted the Head Wrestling coaching position at the school effective immediately. Previous head coach, Tom Milkovich will continue on staff as the Associate Head Coach. Additionally, Walsh Jesuit is adding assistant coaches Louden Gordon and Larry Vance.
Walsh Jesuit Athletic Director Mark Hassman states, “We are very excited to announce that Dave Mariola is coming to lead our WJ Warrior Wrestler program going forward. We feel that Dave along with Tom, Louden and Larry will lead us back to being an exceptionally strong wrestling program as has been historically the case at Walsh Jesuit. We host The Ironman Tournament which is one of the leading high school wrestling tournaments each year in the country and are looking to build our own program back to prominence in this tournament and in the state of Ohio.”
Dave Mariola states “I am extremely proud and honored to be able to take the reins of this program and feel very blessed to have a staff including Tom Milkovich, who was a three-time high school Ohio State Champion, four-time Big Ten Champion, undefeated career in the Big Ten over four years, NCAA champion and long-time high school and college coach. Tom has been a long-time mentor and friend of mine in the sport of wrestling and it will be great to sit in the coaching chair next to him. Additionally, with Louden and Larry, who were all high school Ohio State Champions and have many years of experience coaching wrestling, we feel that we will have one of the best high school wrestling staffs and are excited to dig in and begin working on the program.”
Tom Milkovich who will continue as the Associate Head Coach to Mariola is excited that Walsh has committed a number of additional resources to this storied wrestling program. Tom states “The addition of Dave Mariola to our program will provide great leadership for many years to come. And two-years ago when I was asked to rebuild this program at Walsh, I knew that the first and most important task was to put together a coaching staff that would attract quality student athletes. Together with the help and guidance of Mark Hassman and Bob Henderson and others, I am very confident that this coaching staff will be one of the best in the business. I’ve known these coaches since they were very young and have seen the great things that they have done with wrestlers of all ages. They have enthusiasm, passion for the sport and great knowledge of wrestling. I’m sure that this will attract outstanding young people to our program that will want to get a quality education that Walsh Jesuit provides and at the same time become champions on the mat.”
Dave Mariola was a State Champion in Ohio at St. Peter Bedford Chanel in 1983.
