Warriors Take Down Columbus St. Charles 4-3 in Shupe Tournament

WJ In Mix For Tournament Title

After jumping out to a 4-1 advantage, Walsh Jesuit held off a persistent Columbus St. Charles squad to prevail 4-3 on Wednesday, December 27 in the Shupe Tournament at the Kent State Ice Arena.

Max Miotke scored the game winner early in the third period, but it didn’t seem that way at the time as it put the Warriors up 4-1. Miotke’s goal came as a result of some hard battling and teamwork by Easton Kindall, who leads the team in plus/minus rating, and Steven LeVasseur near their own blue line as they repeatedly refused to let the Cardinals enter. Kindall freed the puck for LeVasseur who sent it along the boards for Miotke in stride and his ensuing shot from a left angle found the upper right corner. However, St. Charles immediately scored twice to close the gap and provide a threat the rest of the way.
The teams played to a scoreless first although Jackson Carrell came close for the Warriors, hitting the post. WJ would take the lead early in the second when Sasha Trudel jumped on a mishandled puck and in a flash his backhand move had the puck up under the crossbar.

Jonathan Gabriel continued his scoring dominance with a low far-side shot that gave the Maroon & Gold a 2-0 lead as he skated out of the left corner. This came as a result of Matt Morris winning the face-off to the point followed by a Charlie Huscroft’s shot dug out by Connor Cook.

After St. Charles scored on a knuckle-puck that found its way through to make the score 2-1, Connor Cook hustled to stop a clearing attempt at the left hash and pushed it to Matt Morris curling low in the circle, his laser shot hitting far-side upper corner for a 3-1 advantage. For Cook, it was the second game in a row with two assists.
