World Languages

Walsh Jesuit offers World Language courses in Spanish, French, Latin, and Chinese.  Students are required to take two years of World Language for graduation.  In 2011, Walsh Jesuit introduced an honors curriculum within the department.  Students are placed in honors courses based on teacher recommendations.
  • APĀ® Spanish Language

    AP Spanish Language and Culture is a rigorous course taught exclusively in Spanish that requires students to improve their proficiency across the three modes of communication (Interpretative, Interpersonal, and Presentational). The course focuses on the integration of authentic resources while using advanced vocabulary and linguistic structures as they build proficiency in all modes of communication and cultural awareness toward the advanced level. Students will be prepared for the Advanced Placement Spanish Language and Culture Test.
  • CCP Basic Spanish 2

    The Spanish 4 CCP course is a language acquisition course designed to provide students with the necessary skills and intercultural understanding to enable them to communicate successfully in an environment where Spanish is spoken. This course requires students to improve their proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students will also study Spain; Geography, Culture, History, Historical Figures/Events, and the Arts. Students may take this course for College Credit.
  • Chinese 1

    This course is an introductory level of Mandarin Chinese which focuses on speaking, listening (with gradual integration of) reading and writing skills. Students are to communicate on familiar topics using words and phrases memorized and practiced. The course will also integrate Chinese culture into language learning to enhance the understanding of cultural influence on the language. 
  • Chinese 2

    The students are expected to be able to respond to simple, direct questions or requests for information. They will continue to broaden their knowledge of Chinese language and culture and to strengthen their conversation and composition skills through a variety of topics.  Emphasis is placed on increasing vocabulary, conversation, and dealing with varied travel, cultural and conversational situations.
  • Chinese 3

    The Chinese 2 course focuses on the four language skills, speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The students are expected to communicate and exchange information about familiar topics using phrases and simple sentences in both oral and written forms. More authentic materials and culture will be introduced to enhance student listening and speaking skills, and the understanding of cultural influence on the language..
  • French 1

    Students will develop French skills through daily speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities while addressing various topics and themes. Authentic materials and literature will be incorporated into the course to allow students to explore francophone cultures.
  • French 2

    Students will continue to develop French skills through daily speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities while addressing various topics and themes, building upon the material covered in French 1. Authentic materials and literature will be incorporated into the course to allow students to explore francophone cultures.
  • Honors Chinese 4

    The students in Honors Chinese 4 course will continue to broaden and deepen their knowledge of Chinese language and culture and to strengthen their conversation and composition skills through a variety of topics including literature. Students can use details and descriptions to support their speech and to use culturally appropriate language and behavior.  Emphasis is placed on increasing authentic reading materials.
  • Honors French 3

    Students will continue to develop French skills through daily speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities while addressing various topics and themes, building upon the material covered in French 2. Authentic materials and literature will be incorporated into the course to allow students to explore francophone cultures. Students can take this course for college credit if desired.
  • Honors French 4

    Students will continue to develop French skills through daily speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities while addressing various topics and themes. Authentic materials and literature will be incorporated into the course to allow students to explore francophone cultures. Students can take this course for college credit, if desired, after Honors French 3.
  • Honors Latin 4

    Study of the Classical Epic cycle: Reading and studying The Iliad, Odyssey, and Vergil’s Aeneid; sStudy of The Journey of Hero, in connection with these works. Continued review of Latin grammar and translation.
  • Honors Spanish 3

    Honors Spanish 3 course is a language acquisition course designed to provide students with the necessary skills and intercultural understanding to enable them to communicate successfully in an environment where Spanish is spoken. As such, the class is an immersion experience requiring almost exclusive use of Spanish, a requirement which class participation grades reflect. Students will study six different Spanish-speaking countries and advanced grammatical structures as part of the course curriculum. Students will be prepared to continue their language study in Spanish 4 or AP Spanish Language and Culture.
  • Latin 1

    Students will learn the basics of the Latin language. Emphasis will be placed on vocabulary, derivatives, conjugations, declensions, pronouns, and translations.
  • Latin 2

    Latin II will cover a review of Latin I. Emphasis will be placed on participials, infinitives, subjunctives, and translations.
  • Latin 3

    Continued focus on Latin Grammar and Translation with a focus on Cicero and the Catilinarian Conspiracy. Historical focus on Gracchi, Marius, Sulla, Cicero and Catilina, and the rise of Julius Caesar.
  • Spanish 1

    Students will be introduced to the Spanish language with a focus on foundational skills such as proper word formation, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. The course aims to enable students to express themselves through basic oral and written sentences. Additionally, students will learn about the diversity and socio-economic challenges within the Spanish-speaking world and enhance their reading and listening comprehension skills.
  • Spanish 2

    Spanish 2 builds on the completion of Spanish 1. Students will develop their reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills. Culture of the Spanish-speaking world will be explored. Following the completion of this course, students will be ready to continue their studies in Spanish 3 or Honors Spanish 3.
  • Spanish 3

    Spanish 3 is an intermediate Latin American survey designed to develop students’ reading/translation, writing, speaking, and listening skills while gaining a basic cultural understanding of a variety of Spanish-speaking countries. Within the differing cultural contexts, students will explore grammatical constructs and verb tenses, as well as expand knowledge of vocabulary, music, and current events.  Students will be prepared to continue their language study in Spanish 4.
  • Spanish 4

    The Spanish 4 CCP course is a language acquisition course designed to provide students with the necessary skills and intercultural understanding to enable them to communicate successfully in an environment where Spanish is spoken. This course requires students to improve their proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students will also study Spain; Geography, Culture, History, Historical Figures/Events, and the Arts. Students may take this course for College Credit.
