Fine Arts

The Visual Arts department serves the students of Walsh Jesuit in an environment of creativity and aesthetic growth. Students begin with the Art Foundations class, where they explore a variety of media and techniques. Upon completion of the Foundations class, students have the opportunity to choose courses in Drawing, Painting, Mixed Media, Honors Art, and Independent Study. Everyone is encouraged to engage in the visual arts courses during their time at Walsh Jesuit, not only to broaden their artistic awareness, but to discover their own unique form of self-expression. In addition to classes, the Walsh Jesuit Art Club meets weekly and is open to all interested students. The purpose of the club is to engage with a group of open-minded, creative individuals to benefit the larger community of Walsh.
  • Acting

    Acting is an interactive, performance-based course that focuses on foundational and advanced techniques in acting, including improvisation, script analysis, character development, and movement. The course emphasizes both basic theatrical performance skills and advanced approaches, including the Stanislavski Method. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to perform confidently in a variety of theatrical setting.

  • Acting 1 - Improvisation

    Acting is an interactive course in theater that focuses on basic foundations and techniques in acting, improvisation, character analysis, and movement. This class is a hands-on, performance-based course that prepares the student for the basics of theatrical performance and related fields. Projects include improv, scenes with partners, full plays, and monologues.
  • Acting 2 - Advanced Topics in Theatre Arts

    Acting 2 is an interactive course in theatre that focuses on expanding the foundations and techniques learned in Acting 1. Students will study advanced improvisation, script analysis, and character development. This hands-on, performance-based class uses the Stanislavski Method in project scenes with partners, full plays, and monologues.
  • APĀ® Art and Design

    This course is designed to enable each student to develop mastery in concept, composition, and execution of 2D design. Students who take this course will learn specifically the analytical skills of problem solving, critical thinking, and aesthetic response. Students taking AP® 2D Art and Design will be working toward the goal of submitting a portfolio of the highest quality to the College Board for scoring.
  • Art Foundations

    Art Foundations explores a variety of media and techniques centered on the elements of art and principles of design. Students will view and critique the work of professional artists and their peers.  This course is suitable for all levels of experience and serves as the prerequisite Drawing and Sculpture.
  • Beyond the Page

    Beyond the page is an exploration of various aspects of music. Topics covered will include basic music theory, music history, and discussions of different musical genres. Students will also learn how to play an instrument of their choice and learn beginning techniques and fundamentals of performing.
  • Ceramics

    Ceramics introduces students to the fundamentals of pottery. Through hands-on exploration and experimentation, students will develop basic skills in clay-handling, shaping, and firing. The course will cover a variety of ceramic techniques, including hand building, clay sculpting, and glazing. 
  • Choir

    Choir is a hands-on, project-based class designed for students new to singing to study choral singing and musical literacy. This course establishes the basics of musicianship such as proper singing technique, basic music literacy, and the fundamentals of performing. Students will perform at concerts, help facilitate the celebration of masses, and travel to compete at festivals throughout the year.
  • Concert Band

    Concert band is a traditional band class comprised of woodwind, brass, and percussion instrumentation. The concert band learns important musical concepts and plays a mixture of classical and modern music. The band performs at four concerts each school year and at select school events. The concert band meets daily and is open to anyone with basic music experience.
  • Drawing 1

    Drawing 1 aims to enhance observational accuracy through various techniques and understand different art media, their characteristics, and creative problem-solving to address visual challenges. Students will enhance their skills in composition, self-critique, and replicating existing imagery while working to develop their own artistic style.
  • Drawing 2

    Drawing 2 continues the journey of refining foundational drawing skills through cultivating perceptual, compositional, and expressive abilities. This course promotes precision in drawing, the creation of captivating compositions, and the nurturing of personal artistic style.
  • Graphic Design

    Graphic Design serves as a gateway to the world of design, exploring design principles, color theory, and typography using both digital tools and traditional materials. Students develop critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills while tackling diverse design challenges.
  • Honors Choir

    Choir is a hands-on, project-based class designed for students new to singing to study choral singing and musical literacy. This course establishes the basics of musicianship such as proper singing technique, basic music literacy, and the fundamentals of performing. Students will perform at concerts, help facilitate the celebration of masses, and travel to compete at festivals throughout the year. Honors Choir members will serve in leadership positions; and perform at events outside of school.

  • Honors Concert Band

    Concert band is a traditional band class comprised of woodwind, brass, and percussion instrumentation. The concert band learns important musical concepts and plays a mixture of classical and modern music. The band performs at four concerts each school year and at select school events. The concert band meets daily and is open to anyone with 1-2 years instrument experience. When taken as an honors course students will serve in leadership positions; have various additional responsibilities and perform at events outside of school.

  • Honors Drawing 2

    Honors Drawing 2 is designed for students who have completed Drawing 1 and are ready to deepen their technical skills, creativity, and understanding of visual expression. Students will explore more complex concepts such as advanced shading, composition, perspective, and mixed media. The course emphasizes refining observational drawing skills, developing personal style, and experimenting with various subjects.
  • Honors String Orchestra

    String orchestra is an ensemble comprised of violin, viola, cello, and bass. The string orchestra learns important musical and string techniques and plays a variety of fun music! String orchestra is a daily course, open to anyone with basic musical experience, and performs at several events each year.  Honors students will serve in leadership positions; have various additional responsibilities and perform at events outside of school.

  • Honors Studio Art

    Honors Studio Art is appropriate for highly motivated students interested in advancing their visual arts studies. Students demonstrate an understanding of a variety of methods and techniques in developing their personal artistic voice while utilizing skills to increase proficiency and build expertise. Students gain knowledge of the role art plays in society and the significance of both art and artists in creating change.
  • Jazz Band

    Jazz Band is a daily after school to learn about various jazz concepts and play a variety of music including swing, Latin, and more. The jazz band is open to anyone with basic music experience, and performs at several events each year, including four concerts. Instrumentation includes saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, and drums. Special consideration:  class meets 10th period daily (2:45-3:25)
  • Painting

    Painting focuses on mainly paint as an artistic form of expression and visual communication. The basic visual elements of design and composition are stressed, as well as the manipulation of material in two- and three-dimensional space. Fundamental painting techniques are explored, as well as the study of artists (historical and contemporary) who primarily employ(ed) paint as the medium of choice in both realistic and abstract terms.
  • Sculpture

    Sculpture employs a variety of media (clay, plaster, wire, recycled/found materials) to visually communicate an idea in a three-dimensional form. Basic sculptural techniques such as modeling, casting, carving, and assemblage/construction play a role in the students’ work. Students gain knowledge of a variety of techniques and possibilities as they explore the works of artists.
  • String Orchestra

    String orchestra is an ensemble comprised of violin, viola, cello, and bass. The string orchestra learns important musical and string techniques and plays a variety of fun music! String orchestra is a daily course, open to anyone with basic musical experience, and performs at several events each year. 
  • Theater Foundations

    Theater Foundations provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the essential vocabulary, concepts, and skills in theater. Through exploring various aspects of acting, technical theater, playwriting, and production design, students will build a strong foundation for continuing in more advanced theater courses such as Acting or Theater Production, or for participating in school productions like the Fall Play or Spring Musical. This course is ideal for students who are new to theater and want to gain a well-rounded understanding of the art form.
  • Theater Production

    Theater Production is a hands-on, project-based class on the technical aspects of theater. Students will understand the theatrical production process from the first reading to the final curtain. The goal is to gain a greater knowledge of the crew and designer's work and role in mounting a theatrical production. Topics include lighting, sound, carpentry, scenic design, and careers in theatre and stage management.
  • Yoga and Art for Wellness

    Yoga and Art for Wellness is a hands-on experiential course that therapeutically integrates the disciplines of yoga and the visual arts.  In recognizing the transformative nature of image-making, students process through verbal sharing and expressive writing. Students learn techniques to cultivate self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-regulation as tools for managing stress and building empathy and community.
