Technology Overview

Our teachers integrate a variety of digital learning platforms on a daily basis. Technology at WJ explores and expands learning and creativity in a deliberate way with our identity as Ignation educators.

Walsh Jesuit uses a 1:1 technology initiative in which all students utilize iPads with Bluetooth keyboards as educational tools. These devices allow the students to access myWJ, where teachers post syllabi, assignments, and resources for class. iPads facilitate mobile learning and communication, reinforcing technology skills students will use in college. While many educational goals are accomplished with our impressive software and online resources, we believe in 'unplugging' and regulating technology free time to help foster authentic and meaningful relationships.

In WJ's computer lab, over 30 computers are available for teachers to reserve during the school day. Additionally, the library houses over 30 more computers students can use between 7am - 4pm on school days.

  • About WJ's Technology Team


    WJ employs a highly qualified technology team that is knowledgeable, prioritizes students and cares for the whole individual. Technology support is available throughout the day, and consistent work behind the scenes is taking place to maintain, improve and expand resources.

    Our IT Director, Mark Schweter, maintains and enhances WJ’s wireless network, and WJ's Technology Support Specialist, Charles Korecki, runs the school’s technology help desk and provides support. Together with Dr. Lisa Baylor, WJ's Educational Technology Specialist, our IT team coordinates and manages technology integration, professional development opportunities, and assists with our technology curriculum.

21st Century Classroom

The Malley's 21st Century Classroom is a "classroom of tomorrow, an open space with modular furniture, a productive environment where skills are developed that are required in college & the workplace... develop[ing] high order thinking skills, effective communication skills, collaboration skills, technological and all other skills that they will need in the 21st century workplace.” (Ed Tech)

The Malley's 21st Century Classroom is innovative with different configurations.  
  • Interactive, Digital Smartboards
  • A Digital Projector
  • Student Devices - used to interact with the Smartboard
  • Audio System
  • Teacher Computer
  • Document Camera - 3D imaging that records and saves lessons.
  • Video Conferencing Equipment
  • Verb Track for Group Planning - promotes creativity, sharing & interaction
  • Node Seating - facilitates group discussions & creates a fluid classroom with a built-in iPad work surface, storage base and seats that are mobile!

Walsh Jesuit is pleased to offer a 1:1 technology environment. To ensure that every freshman is equipped with a device on the first day of school, Walsh Jesuit offers two options for your convenience:

  • iPad Purchase

    If you already have an iPad 2 or newer (including the Mini), you can bring it to orientation, and we will add it to the WJ network. 

  • Technology Access Program (TAP)

    WJ offers iPad purchases via a monthly payment plan.
    With TAP, payments are added to tuition & determined based on tuition payment arrangement. Also, the provision of an iPad will be subject to the satisfactory completion & receipt of the Walsh Jesuit Technology Access Program Purchase Agreement by the WJ Business Office.

  • Q: Is an iPad + keyboard required?

    Yes. All grade levels are required to have an iPad with a Bluetooth keyboard every day.
     

  • Q: What if the iPad is broken/lost?

    Students may borrow school owned iPads on a daily basis.

  • Q: Can I use an Android/Microsoft tablet?

    No, unfortunately our management system is strictly for iOS devices.

  • Q: Why the iPad?

    Based on research, we found the iPad and its robust education apps to be an exceptional addition to the resources we use. Also, a few reasons we chose the iPad are its long battery life, flat profile, ease of use, and instant accessibility. 

  • Q: Can my student use an iPad mini?

    Yes! Our minimum recommendation is an iPad Mini 6th Generation

  • Q: What happens when something new comes?

    This is the nature of today’s technology market. Thus, we always educate our students according to goals and objectives - not according to the device in their backpack. Be assured that we continuously monitor the educational technology market, make adjustments when deemed appropriate, and always work to provide students with the best of resources.

  • Q: Are textbooks online?

    Yes, however, paper is also used. We determine on a course by course basis which brings the most benefit to the student - paper textbooks, online materials or a mix of both.  

  • Q: Which apps are required?

    Specific apps, much like specific school supplies, will depend on the courses of study. We require the use of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), and WJ provides students with a free subscription.

  • Q: Is the internet monitored and filtered?

    Yes. All devices on WJ's internet are subject to our web filtering policies. Please note that once off campus, student iPads are subject to the filtering policies of the internet they access.

  • Q: Will the iPad be distracting? 

    Yes, the iPad offers distractions with access to games and other opportunities - much like in the real world. Having an iPad in class is a great resource, as well as an opportunity for students to practice self-discipline - making appropriate choices when presented with options.

  • Q: Will there be specific training?

    Yes, there will be training on how to use the iPad in an educational setting. This type of use is often different from previous experience.

  • Q: Will the iPad be used for testing?

    Yes. Ohio is a PARCC state and students will be prepared for online testing.
