Warriors Finish Third at OHSAA Division I Sectional Meet

Senior Richie Kurlich, sophomore Kaden Smesko swim to sectional titles


The Walsh Jesuit men’s swimming team finished third of 14 teams at the OHSAA Division I Sectional Tournament held at the University of Akron’s Ocasek Natatorium on Saturday, February 10. This is the first qualifying meet on the road to the State Championship Meet to be held in Canton on February 21 through 24.

Senior Richie Kurlich and sophomore Kaden Smesko each notched sectional titles to lead 10 total Warriors into next weekend's District Meet. Kurlich finished first in the 200 yard individual medley (1:53.67) and 100 yard breaststroke (56.88), while Smesko won the 100 yard backstroke (51.77). Kurlich’s time in the breaststroke broke the Walsh school record of 57.35 that was set in 2010. In addition, the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Kurlich, Smesko, Andrew Kurlich and Adam Lenz also set a new Walsh school record of 3:13.25 while finishing second. The old record of 3:13.35 was set in 2009.
District qualifiers representing the Warriors in the OHSAA Division I District Meet at Cleveland State University's Robert F. Busbey Natatorium in individual events include: seniors Bryson Finelli (100 yard breaststroke), Colin Gaffney (50 and 100 yard freestyle), A. Kurlich (100 yard butterfly), R. Kurlich (200 yard individual medley and 100 yard breaststroke), Lenz (50 yard freestyle and 100 yard breaststroke), Andriy Mahlay (200 yard freestyle and 100 yard butterfly), and Nick Telerico (200 yard individual medley and 100 yard breaststroke); junior Jacob Crissman (200 and 500 yard freestyle); and sophomores Smesko (100 yard butterfly and 100 yard backstroke) and Alex Wintering (500 yard freestyle).
