Walsh Jesuit’s Announces Two New Scholarship Opportunities for Incoming Students

CUYAHOGA FALLS, OH February 15, 2018 — Walsh Jesuit High School has established two new scholarship opportunities for prospective students. Students entering their freshmen year in the fall of 2018 could be eligible for the Pedro Arrupe Scholarship or the Xavier Scholars Program.

“This is something new for Walsh Jesuit, as we previously only offered need-based tuition assistance in the form of financial aid. We are thrilled to open a new chapter in our history, allowing us to maintain our competitiveness among other Northeast Ohio Catholic schools, while also giving students who might not have access to a Walsh Jesuit education, an opportunity to attend” said Walsh Jesuit High School President, Karl Ertle.
Each year, Walsh Jesuit awards over $2 million in financial aid, all of which are need-based, in support of approximately 38% of our students. The funds from the financial aid program are generated by the school’s endowment and donations restricted to financial aid by the benefactor. Financial aid is awarded based solely on need and not for academic, athletic or fine art achievement. Funding for the The Arrupe and Xavier Scholarships is separate financial assistance.

The Scholarships:
The Arrupe Scholarship Program
This scholarship will recognize students who score from 95-99 on the Walsh Jesuit HSPT admissions/placement test offered here at the school. Scholarships are renewable each year provided that Scholars maintain strong academic and behavioral standards. Funds are provided by donors and other sources and are not transferable to another school. Qualifying candidates will receive a scholarship of $2,000 annually.
The Arrupe Scholarship Program is named in honor of Pedro Arrupe who was the 28th Superior General of the Jesuits following Vatican II and has been called “the second Ignatius.” Known for his passion for social justice and love of all that was fostered as he cared for the victims of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, Arrupe worked in Jesuit formation and, in an address to Jesuit alumni in Valencia, Spain, in 1973, challenged them to be “men and women for others;” that has now become the hallmark of Jesuit schools across the globe. He suffered a debilitating stroke and died in 1991.

The Xavier Scholars Program
“This unique program will promote academic excellence, foster unity, and provide leadership and service opportunities. For their good works and involvement in the school’s mission of Forming Women and Men for and with Others, students will earn credits toward tuition as determined on an individual basis as they serve and commit to growth in their spiritual and intellectual development,” said Kaneshia Crenshaw, Walsh Jesuit’s Director of Diversity and Inclusion.

All applicants must complete the FAIR application for tuition assistance annually as a regular component of the Walsh Jesuit financial aid process. The Xavier Scholarship Program committee will notify students of their eligibility in December of their 8th grade year to begin the application process. Potential Scholars will show commitment to both academics and spirituality by excelling in the classroom and making a positive impact in their churches and communities. Candidates will be asked to interview with representatives of the school and provide references.

Credits are renewable each year provided that Scholars maintain strong academic and behavioral standards. Funds are not transferable to another school. Each case will be considered individually and students may earn credits up to $3,000 annually through full commitment and involvement. In addition, Scholars will participate in an enrichment program beginning shortly after their acceptance and serve as school ambassadors, regularly attending scheduled programs, lectures, field trips, community service and educational sessions throughout the year.
The Xavier Scholars Program is named in honor of St. Francis Xavier (Zay-vure) who was a companion of the founder of the Jesuits, St. Ignatius Loyola, and is known as one of the great missionaries of all time. They met and studied together at the University of Paris in the 1520s and later, when Ignatius missioned his friend to the East, he did so with the words, “Go light the world on fire.” Xavier did just that as he traveled by ship across the globe to embrace other cultures and share the love of Christ.

In Xavier’s honor, Walsh Jesuit High School has established a program of excellence to invite students of under-represented demographics into Jesuit education so they too can light the world on fire through their faith and service.
