Warriors Grind Past Resistant Lake Catholic 3-1

A fast 2-0 start offset a quirky second period and Walsh Jesuit pulled through for a 3-1 win over a pesky Lake Catholic on Wednesday, December 20 at the Mentor Civic Ice Arena.
Nick Neiger’s aggressive rush got the game started right. “They couldn’t help but hook him,” remarked WJ Coach Pat McKendry. On the power play, Conner Coughlin went low to knock down a tricky puck and keep it in the zone for Jonathan Gabriel. His waist high shot from the right was deflected in by Nathan Colasanti after muscling into position.

Later Gabriel’s generosity continued, taking Drew Rossiter’s outlet pass and maneuvering right for a low shot and rebound that Conner Cook slammed in from the left.

The second period started with Cougar pressure and a questionable too-many-men on the ice penalty as a puck struck a Warrior player entering the ice. The penalty was soon neutralized by a holding call on a Cougar defenseman preventing a play out of the zone. Although the Cougars were assessed an additional bench minor, WJ could do nothing with the 4-on-3 followed by a 5-on-3. Aside from a pull-up, sleight of hand chance by Jackson Carrell, Lake Catholic reduced the attack to a crawl.

Bill Holtzer pushed in a puck for Steven LeVasseur, who fought off a defender behind the net to feed Max Miotke breaking into the high slot, ripping it into the right corner. This sealed a not-so-easy victory over the feisty Cougars, with goalie Rob Kish making 43 saves.

“Good teams find a way to win even when not playing their best” commented WJ captain Rossiter on the Warriors’ resilience.
