Warriors Rein In Gilmour, 3-1, To Contend For First Place in League

Jonathan Gabriel scored a pair of goals to help Walsh Jesuit defeat visiting Gilmour Academy, 3-1, in a key league match on Saturday, December 16.

Gabriel has recorded six goals in his last two games.

Entering the fray, Gilmour was tied atop the league standings with St. Edward but with the win over the Lancers, the Warriors enter the mix with a 2-1-1 slate in conference play.
WJ fell behind early, 1-0, but with a player in the penalty box, Max Mitoke’s shorthanded goal toward the end of the first period turned the game around. Steven LeVasseur twirled in the neutral zone and banked a pass off the center ice boards for Miotke, who by accelerating into it beat two defensemen to the lower right circle for a shot inside the near post.

Then the Warrior D clamped down in the second period. Nick Neiger points to the play of freshman Charlie Huscroft, remarking “Charlie is a real asset on defense.” He stopped a deke in the low slot, and Easton Kindall intercepted one, turning it up the boards to Gabriel for a breakaway and a 2-1 lead. Jakari Desphy frustrated the Lancer attack, flashing the left pad on a second-chance following a block by PJ Calleri, and doing the splits on another save with the right pad.

Late in the second period Nathan Colasanti broke a tenacious Gilmour forecheck to get the puck into the offensive zone. Matt Morris barreled in, deflecting a clearing attempt along the left boards into the middle slot leaving Gabriel open for a “twisted-wrister” up under the crossbar.

The victory gives the Warriors momentum heading into a key stretch of three league gamses before the Shupe Memorial Christmas Tournament.
