Walsh Ties Buffalo Grove 4-4, Earns Respect at Cornfield Cup

Jonathan Gabriel’s dominating four-goal performance earned the Walsh Jesuit hockey squad a 4-4 tie with Buffalo Grove in the third-place game of the Cornfield Cup on Sunday, December 10 at Culver Academy's Henderson Arena.
Gabriel’s first score came on a wide rush to the right activated by Connor Cook, cutting around the defenseman to the goal mouth and through the 5-hole. The second and fourth goals were faceoffs won cleanly by Steven LeVasseur, back to Gabriel lined up toward the top of the circle and moving toward the middle to fire it home.

“Easiest assists I’ve ever had,” said LeVasseur, who won 8 of 11 draws.

Up 2-0, Buffalo Grove dominated the second period, taking the lead and aided by several Warrior penalties.  Resilience was rewarded when Gabriel tied it 3-3, also set up by Cook from the left side of the slot on the power play. Key blocked shots came from Anthony Calleri early, PJ Calleri in the third period, and Max Miotke to send the game into overtime. In OT a diving interception by Drew Rossiter prevented a breakaway.

The tie helped the Warriors finish the tournament with a strong 2-1-1 record, bested by just one other Warrior team in seven tries.
