Walsh Jesuit starts the Cornfield Cup with 2-1 win over Carmel

If you find a lakeside resort with snow falling on the beach and an ice rink with tough sledding inside, you may be at the Cornfield Cup in Culver, Indiana.

With two goals by Matt Morris, Walsh Jesuit opened up play in the Cornfield Cup by defeating a tough Carmel (IN) squad 2-1 on Friday, December 8 at Culver Academy.
However, it didn’t look promising early as Carmel’s Youklis produced a shifty toe-drag, fake shot and pass down low for Hughes to go up 1-0.  A complete team effort steadied the ship, and before the end of the period WJ's Morris back-handed a rebound to tie it, after Nathan Colasanti pushed the puck to the net off the faceoff.

The Warriors took over momentum in the second period with a 6-2 advantage in scoring chances.  Jakari Desphy stopped one of them lying on his back, reaching behind his head with his stick to deny what looked like a sure goal. Otherwise, for stretches the Warrior fore-check had Carmel hemmed in.

Early in the third period, WJ's Jonathan Gabriel chased down a puck in right corner off a rush, won the battle and immediately sent a sharp pass to the high slot where Morris buried an ankle-high shot for the final goal advantage.  Carmel then pushed back, helped by a late power play.  Easton Kindall shut down the greatest threat, defending a creative deke similar to the first goal move for move, anticipating the final pass and blocking the point-blank shot.
