Warrior Hockey Gets Even With Holy Name With 3-2 Overtime Win

Walsh Jesuit avenged an earlier overtime loss to Holy Name on Saturday, December 2 by turning the tables on the Green Wave and posting a 3-2 overtime win in a late evening game in Parma.

Less than 2 weeks ago, the Green Wave took down the Warriors, 4-3 in overtime at Kent State. Holy Name and Walsh Jesuit have been fierce rivals over the past 13 seasons but the Warriors hold a 22-8-1 series record.
Holy Name opened up the scoring early in the first frame after a costly Warrior turnover, sending the Green Wave faithful into a frenzy. After back-and-forth, fast-paced action by both teams, WJ seniors Max Miotke and Steven LeVesseur engaged on a crafty 2-on11 passing display with LeVasseur finishing off a pass from Miotke to even the period at 1-1.

The Green Wave struck first in the second stanza to take a 2-1 lead. The rest of the second period was filled with end-to-end action with both teams playing hard, both even strength and on special teams. Late in the second period, Warrior freshman defenseman Charlie Huscroft found Miotke on a "highlight reel" stretch pass, sending Miotke on a break-a-way where he successfully slid a wrist shot into the lower corner of the net tying up the game at twos.

The third period continued more of the fast-paced, high-flying contest that the previous two periods started. Great saves were made by Walsh Jesuit senior goaltender Jakhari Desphy and the Holy Name goalie, keeping the action tied as the remaining ticks fell off the clock at the end of regulation play.

With each team receiving one point in the GLHL standings, the teams prepared for a 4 vs. 4 overtime, eight-minute extra frame. Once again fast paced action dominated the play by both teams. Warrior seniors Jonathan Gabriel and Matt Morris hooked up for a great passing play just missing the net on a great scoring opportunity, then Holy Name engaged in a similar effort but with the same result.

Almost midway through the overtime period, Warrior senior forwards Miotke and LeVasseur took off on yet another 2-on-1 passing clinic. The finishing piece this time was the Warriors senior captain Drew Rossiter joining the rush from the back of the play, engaging in an all out battle at the front of the HN net where he found the loose puck and quickly deposited it into the back of net for the 3-2 win.

"Hats off to a great hockey game by both teams. This atmosphere, building, and quality opponent made for a fun game, and thankfully we were able to come out on top of this one," said Walsh Jesuit Head Coach Pat McKendry. "You really can't ask for a better game.  I am very proud of our seniors for sticking to the plan, and working so hard leading the way.  We had great performances from the seniors and the young players as well."
