Seniors Lead Way as Warriors collect "W" Over Shaker Heights

Lead by stellar performances from seniors Matt Morris, Jakhari Desphy, Max Miotke and Jonathan Gabriel, the Walsh Jesuit hockey squad finished off Shaker Heights 2-1 in the Thanksgiving Invitational at the Kent State University Ice Arena on Sunday, November 26.
Coming off of a very lackluster performance Saturday evening against Meadeville (PA), the Warriors squared off with Shaker Heights and turned in a scoreless first period of back and fourth play at both ends.

Shaker Heights opened up the second period finding the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. However, Gabriel answered the Shaker Heights goal with onefor the Warriors at the 3:41 mark of the second period. Senior Connor Coughlin started the rush making a strong outlet pass to freshman Hunter Nalepka who handed out one the best passes of the tournament to find Gabriel streaking down the right side of the ice. The period ended tied at 1-1.

Out of the locker room,WJ came out swinging first and swinging hard in the third period, dominating play at the Shaker end. Senior Drew Rossiter dug the puck out tofellow  senior Steven LeVasseur who made a smart outlet chip to Miotke. On a 2-on-1 rush, Miotke slid a wrist shot off the far post for the game-winning goal.

Late in the third period after a penalty, Shaker Heights pressed hard, but Desphy made some big saves to preserve the win.

"After a very poor performance last night, our team showed its determination to play well today, said Head Coach Pat McKendry. "That is a tough, well-coached team that always plays tough against us. This was a hard-fought good hockey game by both teams,"
