On Friday, August 10, 2018 the Walsh Jesuit High School Alumni Association hosted its annual Alumni Awards Night. The evening honored recipients of the Distinguished Alumnus Awards as well as the Athletic Hall of Fame inductees. The Distinguished Alumnus Award is presented to an alumnus or alumna who has utilized his or her talents in an exemplary way to serve God and the community, consistent with Walsh Jesuit’s mission “Men and Women for and with Others.” Ambassador Kenneth Merten ’79 and Reverend Edward Siebert, S.J. ’84 were both honored.

Ambassador Merten was recognized for a remarkable career of service both to the United States of America, as well as to the people of Croatia and especially Haiti. Fr. Siebert was presented the award for his work at Loyola Productions, an organization he helped to found, which provides high quality and thought provoking content to challenge our view of the world. Fr. Siebert is also the first alumnus from Walsh Jesuit to have joined the Jesuit order.

The Walsh Jesuit High School Alumni Association also recognized six members of the Walsh Jesuit Community who made significant contributions to their sport as an athlete or coach with the Class of 2018 Athletic Hall of Fame induction. Former Walsh Jesuit athletes inducted were; Justin Alaburda ’00 (football, baseball and basketball), Paul Hudson Jones II (PJ) ’00 (wrestling, football and baseball), Kathryn (Tulisiak) Randquist ’01 (soccer, basketball and track), Lorena Floccari ’04 (softball and cross country), Johnna Zaccari ’07 (basketball, track and field). In addition, Coach Bill Barger was honored for his significant contribution to the Walsh Jesuit High School wrestling program. Coach Barger led the Warriors to multiple team and individual state and national championships and was the founder of the enormously popular Ironman Tournament.

Alumni Volunteer Program

The Alumni Volunteer program is a 10-month program, covering one school year designed for recent college graduates and young alumni (age 25 and under) of Walsh Jesuit High School. The four pillars on which this program relies are community, spiritual development/discernment, professional development and service to the school. Through these four areas, we hope to provide a mutually beneficial experience for the school and the volunteer. This is an opportunity for our Alumni Volunteers to serve in conjunction with our Jesuit mission, as an asset to our school community, living as an example of service to our current students.

  • Qualifications

    Individuals accepted into the program make a commitment of total involvement in the Walsh Jesuit High School community for a period of one school year.
    Basic requirements of an Alumni Volunteer:
    • Graduate of Walsh Jesuit High School and a recent college graduate
    • Willingness to make a full one year commitment to Walsh Jesuit High School
    • Openness to both personal and spiritual growth and development
    • Desire and ability to live, work and develop along with other volunteers
    • Flexible, passionate, self-starter
  • Expectations

    Expectations of all Alumni Volunteers:

    • participate in the new faculty orientation session in August
    • tutor and supervise in the Academic Resouce Center (ARC) and other learning service programs as assigned
    • attend faculty/staff and departmental meetings and gatherings

    • staff at least one retreat
    • prefect during the school day
    • chaperone events (dances, service trips, etc.)
    • assist with moderating Labre, Sophomore Service and Gonzaga
    • perform other duties as assigned (i.e. Companions Program, Admissions Department, Library, etc.).
    • live in community with other Alumni Volunteers
    • engage in the spiritual growth program for Alumni Volunteers
  • Application

    Individuals interested in participating in the program must apply the year prior to their intended involvement. First consideration will be given to those applicants who apply before May 18, 2018, however rolling acceptance of applications means that those who apply after this date could still be potentially considered. To apply, applicants must submit a current resume and cover letter, a college transcript and a letter of recommendation to Director of Human Resources, Sally Froelich (FroelichS@walshjesuit.org).

    Applications are reviewed on the basis of academic excellence, school and community involvement, evidence of commitment to the Jesuit mission and teaching experience/aptitude. Up to two volunteers are accepted per year.
  • Compensation

    Participants receive a housing stipend, and a personal stipend.
