WJ Fights Cancer Week - April 2-April 5

Dear Parents and Friends:

On behalf of the student body of Walsh Jesuit we are happy to announce that the week of April 2nd to April 5th will be designated as “WJ Fights Cancer Week.”

According to the American Cancer Society, in 2010 over 1.5 million people were expected to be diagnosed with some form of cancer: this figure includes over 64,000 people in Ohio alone.   Many of our students and staff know firsthand of the traumatic affect the diagnosis and treatment of cancer has on the individual, the family, and friends. It is especially difficult for students who need to continue going to school while dealing with this in their personal lives.  Many do not know how to talk about it and very often other students don’t know what to say.  The purpose of this week is to increase awareness of cancer in the Walsh community as well as to pay tribute to these individuals and families that are affected.

The week will include various activities to bring students together and to help raise awareness and funds which will be donated to the American Cancer Society.  On Tuesday, April 2nd, there will be an assembly to kick off the week featuring Guest Speaker Mikaela Gruber (Walsh Jesuit class of 2012) who was diagnosed with stage 2A Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in July 2012.

This assembly will also include a slideshow, which will pay tribute to individuals in the Walsh Jesuit family who are currently undergoing treatment or who have completed treatment.  If you would like someone in your family recognized, please email marquarda@walshjesuit.org

PLEASE SEND A PICTURE OF THIS PERSON FOR OUR SLIDE SHOW AND DISPLAY BY WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20TH AT THE LATEST. If you have given Walsh a picture of a loved one in previous years, we do not need another copy. We think it will be meaningful to students to see just how many people in the Walsh Jesuit community have been affected by cancer, so we encourage families to send in pictures.

In addition, special lunch activities are planned as well as the sale of t-shirts.  A dress down day will be held on Friday, March 5th. Students will be able to dress down for free if they purchase and wear their Cancer week shirt on the dress down day.

The Relay for Life begins Saturday, April 6, at 4:00 p.m., and ends Sunday, April 7, at 10:00 a.m. Sign-ups are available on this LINK- www.RelayforLife.org/walshjesuiths

In an effort to reduce costs and raise funds during that week we have established sponsorships for families and/or businesses. If you are interested in being a sponsor, please fill out the WJ Cancer Contribution Form and contact Kendall Hughes at 13.hughesk@walshjesuit.org.

Donations may be sent directly to Walsh Jesuit High School, c/o WJ Fights Cancer.

Checks may also be made out to the American Cancer Society.

We hope this will be a memorable week at WJ.  We thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

WJ Fights Cancer Committee
