Ben placed seventh in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.82 and fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 58.13. Warriors place third at district meet

Boshkos wins breaststroke; Maroon and Gold set three school records

February 15, 2013 -- The Warrior swimming and diving team scored 210 points to place third at the O.H.S.A.A. Northeast District Swimming and Diving Championships this past weekend. Held at Robert F. Busby Natatorium, the Maroon and Gold fell to defending state champion University School (345.5 points) and Hawken School (283 points). All told, the Maroon and Gold captured one individual title, set three school records, and earned three automatic qualifying spots and six at-large spots in qualifying six swimmers and one diver to next weekend’s state meet competition at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

The first individual to automatically qualify to Canton was Cole Francetic in one meter diving. On Wednesday afternoon, Cole placed sixth overall, with a school record score of 339.40 points in the 11-dive competition. Cole broke Brendan Kipina’s record of 335.80, set just two weeks ago at the North Coast League championships. On a side note, this will be Cole’s second trip to a state meet in the 2012-13 school year. Cole also competed this past fall on the Warrior cross country team that placed six in the Division I state meet. Furthermore, this “double” duplicates Cole’s effort of the 2011-12 school year, competing in two state meets as a runner and a diver.

Ben Boshkos and Joey Reilman both had an exceptional meet in Friday evening’s swim version of district competition. Both qualified in two individual events and in two relays to next weekend’s big dance. Attaining an automatic bid, Ben won the 100 yard breaststroke with a personal best time of 59.02 to earn his second straight trip to Canton in the breaststroke. Ben also placed fourth in the 50 yard freestyle to earn at-large bid. Joey placed second in the 100 yard backstroke to also earn an automatic bid to state. His time of 51.99 is a school record, breaking his old record of 52.02, set at the Northeast Ohio Classic this past winter. This is also Joey’s second straight trip to Canton in the backstroke. In addition, Joey placed in the 200 yard freestyle to earn an at-large bid. In addition, Ben and Joey contributed to the success of the relays, as all three relays will get their chance to compete with Ohio’s swim elite. The 200 medley relay team of Reilman, Boshkos, Tanner Schodowski, and Michael Petras placed third; the 200 yard freestyle relay of Boshkos, Petras, Schodowski, and Matt Remen placed fifth; and the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Petras, Reilman, Schodowski, and Drew Lenz placed sixth.

The third Warrior to earn an at-large spot to Canton was Patrick Olivier. Not only did Patrick place fourth in the 500 yard freestyle, his time of 5:53.13 is a new school record. Patrick bettered Porter Ritchie’s 5:53.14 which Porter set at the 2009 district meet. Patrick also finished 22nd in the 100 yard butterfly.

Additional team points were earned by Drew Lenz – ninth in the 200 yard freestyle and 16th in the 500 yard freestyle; Tanner Schodowski – ninth in the 100 yard backstroke; Nick Pennza – 12th in the 100 yard backstroke; Tom Imhoff – 13th in the 100 yard breaststroke; and Connor Murphy – 16th in the 200 yard individual medley.
